The Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda and Uganda

August 23, 2026 2 min read

Gorilla trekking happens year-round, but the feel of the trip changes with rainfall, trail conditions, permit demand, and how you combine the trek with safari.

The Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda and Uganda

There is no single perfect month for gorilla trekking, but there are clear differences between easier trail conditions and softer shoulder-season travel. In both Rwanda and Uganda, gorilla trekking is possible throughout the year. The choice is usually about balancing cleaner hiking conditions with permit demand and broader itinerary goals.

Drier periods

The drier months are often easier for trekking because trails can be less slippery and overland driving is generally simpler. In Rwanda and Uganda, many travelers aim for June to September and the shorter drier period around December to February. These windows also tend to attract more demand, which means permit timing matters more.

Wetter periods

The rainy seasons can mean muddier trails, mistier forest, and slower overland movement. That does not make trekking bad. In fact, the forest can feel especially atmospheric and photographic. But it does mean the trip should be planned with more flexibility, realistic driving days, and the right gear.

How safari combinations change the answer

If the trip is mostly about gorillas, you can often plan around trekking comfort alone. If you are combining the trek with Akagera, Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls, or a Kenya/Tanzania safari extension, then the best season becomes a route question rather than a single-park question.

  • Short premium gorilla trip: prioritize permit availability and easier transfer flow.
  • Uganda overland circuit: prioritize both trekking conditions and safari road pace.
  • Multi-country route: match the whole journey to the strongest shared weather window.

A good planner does not just answer “when should I go?” They answer “when should I go for the version of the trip I actually want?”
